Researchers estimate that about 1 in every 2,500 babies has craniosynostosis in the United States. Craniosynostosis causes a change in the normal shape of the head. If a suture − the seam between two skull bones − is fused, it cannot grow. This causes the bones with open sutures to grow more than usual to allow enough room for brain growth.
