Understanding the Context
A dermatophyte infection, also known as dermatophytosis or tinea, refers to a group of fungal infection s that can affect the skin, hair, and nails. Tinea infections are one of the most common causes of superficial fungal infections around the world and are distinguished by the area of the body affected. Cutaneous mycoses are a group of superficial fungal infections affecting the skin, hair, and nails. They may be caused by different kinds of fungi, including dermatophytes, yeasts of the Candida genus, and other non- dermatophytic fungi.

A fungal culture can be done if the KOH test is negative or inconclusive, or if the presentation is unusual.
Keep in mind that the diagnosis of tinea corporis can also be made on clinical findings alone.
