Rickettsia is a genus of nonmotile, gram-negative, nonspore-forming, highly pleomorphic bacteria that may occur in the forms of cocci (0.1 μm in diameter), bacilli (1–4 μm long), or threads (up to about 10 μm long).
Understanding the Context
Flea-borne rickettsial infections, caused by R. typhi and Rickettsia felis, are distributed globally and particularly in and around urban port cities and coastal regions with large rodent populations. Of the 800 species of ticks in the world, less than 60 species transmit bacteria when they bite. One group of bacteria ticks carry is called rickettsiae.

Some Rickettsia species are invertebrate symbionts. Currently, rickettsiae, which are transmitted mainly by ticks, are spreading worldwide. Rickettsial diseases are a group of illnesses caused by a specific type of bacteria called rickettsiae. These bacteria are unique because they can only survive and multiply inside the living cells of other organisms, making them obligate intracellular parasites. Rickettsial diseases (rickettsioses) and related diseases (anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, Q fever, scrub typhus) are caused by a group of gram-negative, obligately intracellular coccobacilli. All, except for Coxiella burnetii, have an arthropod vector.
