First detection of zoonotic Rickettsia Species in dog ticks from Malawi reveals potential public health risk Rickettsia is a genus of nonmotile, gram-negative, nonspore-forming, highly pleomorphic bacteria that may occur in the forms of cocci (0.1 μm in diameter), bacilli (1–4 μm long), or threads (up to about 10 μm long). Flea-borne rickettsial infections, caused by R. typhi and Rickettsia felis, are distributed globally and particularly in and around urban port cities and coastal regions with large rodent populations. Of the 800 species of ticks in the world, less than 60 species transmit bacteria when they bite.
